Q1— Section header —
1.1.6
1.2.1Ferrous metals are alloys that contain iron as the base metal.
1.2.2
1.3Cast iron Aluminium Copper Chromium To increase strength To i ncrease corrosion resistance To r educe costs
1.6Increased or decreased hardness Increased compressive or tensile strength Improved resistance to heat, wear or corrosion Increased elasticity, toughness, malleability or plasticity Reduce grain size [25]25

2.1.3False
2.1.4False
2.1.8
2.2
2.3ot ductile Poor conductors of heat and electricity ave low melting and boiling points re soluble in some mechanical or organic solvents
2.4Most glass fibre is used as reinforcing material in plastic non textile products. Glass fibre in the form of cloth is used for insulation and filtering. Very pure glass is made into fibres that transmit light over long distances.
Q3— Section header —
3.1.1Allotropic
3.1.2Reduction
3.1.3Limestone
3.1.4Annealing
3.1.5
3.3
3.2The rotor furnace is used for the manufacturing of high quality steel. The cylindrical furnace rotates slowly at approximately one revolution per minute. It can tilt to ease loading and discharge. A primary jet of oxygen blows directly into the molten pool of metal.
Q4— Section header —
4.1.5
4.2.1It is also used to check the influence of the different types of heat treatments and whether the carbon and phosphorus content is too high. The bending test is often used to test the ductility of welds.
4.2.2The shape of the test piece is important because the material must not break in the area where it is being held. here are standard shapes, lengths and diameters that can be used when doing a tension test.
4.3A special strainom ter can be attached to find the proportional limit and yield strength in shear. Shearing resilience and rigidity can also be determined. The ductility of the material can be found by the amount of twist it takes
4.4The material being tested The method of testing A summary of the test results including tables, diagrams, graphs, data sheets etc. The f inding of the test

About Material Technology examination preparation

This TVET examination resource can be used as part of a structured revision programme. Past papers are most useful when learners attempt questions independently, work within a realistic time limit, and review their answers afterwards.

How to use this resource for revision

A TVET past examination paper is most useful when it is treated as an active revision exercise. Try the questions yourself before checking the corresponding memorandum. Where you make an error, identify the reason — was it a knowledge gap, a calculation mistake, an interpretation issue, or an examination technique problem?

For stronger examination practice, complete the paper without unnecessary interruptions and keep track of the questions that take the most time. Afterwards, review the memorandum and separate knowledge gaps from mistakes caused by interpretation, calculation, structure, or examination technique.

A practical revision approach

Start by completing the resource without looking at the memorandum. Review incorrect and incomplete answers afterwards and make a short revision list based on the areas that caused difficulty.
